Christian Science first came to our home in March, 1900
Christian Science first came to our home in March, 1900. My son, when but five years of age, had been seriously ill with appendicitis, the same disease appeared again three years later, leaving him with a complicated bowel and stomach trouble, which appeared like a form of paralysis of the bowels, as there was no action whatever, without injections of the very strongest kinds of medicine. His diet was limited to rice, tapioca, milk, and eggs,—to eat anything else would bloat him beyond description. Many times we thought he surely would die. At last it was decided that nothing but an operation would effect a permanent cure. In this condition I took him to Grand Rapids, Mich., intending to see a specialist. It was then Divine Love met my need, and I was induced to try Christian Science. For seven days there was no relief, and night after night I examined him, expecting to find him in the old condition, but I found him sleeping better and better each night. On the eighth day the illusion was destroyed; for some time error would occasionally seem to manifest itself, but Truth conquered, and he soon had the most perfect health.
I have become an earnest student of this Truth which frees from sin and disease, which makes us meek, merciful, just, and pure. Truly I can say with the Psalmist, "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits." We have seen many proofs of God's protecting love and care. This winter I went nearly every day where there were eight cases of small-pox, and, although I manifested every symptom of the disease, in twenty-six hours I was perfectly restored through the understanding that God is ever-present and all-powerful.
I can best express my thanks by trying to live each day as our dear Leader has taught us, clinging steadfastly to God and His idea, allowing nothing but His likeness to abide in my thought.
