Fourteen years ago, I was a total wreck, given up by my physicians, and sent home to die. I had been afflicted with chronic dyspepsia and indigestion for fifteen years, and had completed the entire round of medical treatment, including mineral baths and travel. To sense I was gradually nearing the end. While in this condition I heard for the first time of Christian Science. I did not know what it was, but was induced to try it by a friend. My condition was such that I could not take any food without causing me great pain; I suffered from taking a drink of water.
I was a member of an orthodox church and had been a Sabbath School superintendent and class leader for ten years. Many times I had prayed fervently to God to hear me, but my prayers were unanswered and I suffered on as others do who have not the understanding of prayer.
I went to see the Scientist very reluctantly, with many misgivings and doubts, but was told by the lady that I must eat my supper that evening and come to see her in the morning. My fear of food was so great that she could scarcely persuade me to eat at all. That evening I ate of everything I wanted, even to meat-pie and cake; I drank a cup of strong coffee, and, to my great astonishment, slept soundly all night. I awoke in the morning without a pain and was hungry for my breakfast. The scales began to fall from my eyes and I was convinced that God is in the world as of old, and that His children are doing the work again that Jesus had taught them to do nineteen hundred years ago.
