An Exalted Ministry

As Christian Scientists we hold a peculiarly sacred relation to our fellows, and it has been truly said that ours is an holy calling. We are summoned to comfort the sorrowing, to bind up the broken-hearted, to reclaim the sinner, to encourage despairing endeavor, to make wasted lives useful, to heal the sick, and all this in the name of Christ, in the way of God's appointing.

Ours it is to extend a helping hand to the repentant sinner, ours to defeat the cunning of the tempter, ours to annul the rule of malice, hatred, hypocrisy, lust. Truly the responsibility is great! Ours it is to obey that mighty new commandment, to love as Christ loved; ours it is to be meek with the meekness of Jesus, merciful as our Father in heaven is merciful, just with the immutable, unswerving justice of infinite Love; ours it is to be steadfast in purity of thought, purity of word, purity of deed.

We have solemnly promised "to strive, watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus" (Science and Health, p. 497). Our daily prayer is, "Let the reign of Truth and Love be established in me, rule me, and rule out of me all sin" (Manual of the Mother Church). Thrice blessed is that man who is truly a practitioner of Christian Science, who has crucified the lusts of the flesh, who is indeed a minister of grace.
