World's Fairs as Peace Producers

St. Louis Globe-Democrat

Great international expositions like that which France is to hold in 1900, and like the one which is to be held in St. Louis in 1903, are educators and peace preservers for the world. They teach geography, history, science, art, and economics to the masses of those participating in them in a more vivid way than text-books and lectures could do. They break down the barriers of prejudice and distrust which isolation incites, and establish a brotherly feeling among the people of the different nations which is more effective than peace conferences and diplomatic alliances in averting wars. World's fairs are among the most conspicuous and beneficent of the instrumentalities of civilization, and those nations and individuals profit most by them which are the largest participants in them.
