Fear or Faith

"And the apostles said unto the Lord, Increase our faith." Faith in what? Faith in that Power over all evil, which they had seen exercised by their Master in casting out demons and healing the sick. Faith is the best friend of man, and fear is his worst enemy.

Mortal man lives in an atmosphere of fear; he is afraid of fear, afraid of disease, afraid of contagion, afraid of heat, and afraid of cold. He is afraid of failure, of poverty, of what his neighbors will say, and afraid of death. His fears are without number; their name is legion. But faith is one. One thought of faith in the supremacy of Good, shall put to flight a thousand fears.

Paul said, "I have kept the faith." Faith in what? Faith in the power of Good to overcome all evil, even when evil seems to be the only power. For Paul kept this faith through persecution, hatred, imprisonment, weakness, perils by land and by sea, in shipwreck, and even in seeming death. That is why he had the right to say, "Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness."
