Admiral Dewey arrived at Washington Monday, October 2. His journey from New York to Washington was a continuous ovation. His departure from Washington two years ago was unnoticed, except by a few personal friends. He returned on the same special train that the President is to have for his western trip. When he went away it was a comparatively unknown commodore; he returned with the rank of admiral, and is no doubt the most popular American today.
October 3 he was presented with the sword authorized by Congress. The presentation speech was made by Secretary Long. The Admiral received the sword from the hands of the President, whose brief speech was received with great enthusiasm. Admiral Dewey's response was brief and characteristically modest.
The festivities were concluded with a state dinner at the White House.
