President McKinley's Speech
Following Secretary Long, President McKinley arose, and taking in his hand the magnificent sword, presented it to the admiral in the name of the American people. The President was in excellent voice, and his brief speech was received with the greatest enthusiasm.
The President said,—
Admiral Dewey:—From your entrance into the harbor of New York with your gallant crew and valiant ship the demonstrations which everywhere have greeted you reveal the public esteem of your heroic action and the fulness of the love in which you are held by your country.
