Healed of Many Ills
About the first of this year, there came to our house, a woman to act as housekeeper. On the first evening after her arrival, I spoke to her about Christian Science. She said she had heard something about it, and one of her friends had claimed to be helped by it, but for herself she had no use for it. The next morning at breakfast she was much surprised that no audible blessing was asked, and she wanted to know if Christian Scientists did not pray. This was explained to her satisfaction, and she was given Science and Health to read. Day by day she asked many questions, and became more and more interested. She said that Science and Health was wonderful book, and that the more she read it the better she liked it.
She was suffering from many troubles. One was rheumatism, another the result of a fall, which had troubled her so that she could turn in bed only with great difficulty. She was wearing a plaster on the sole of each foot and three on her back and sides. At the end of the first week she asked my sister what the treatments were like, and if there was any examination or manipulation. This being explained to her, she asked for treatment. That night she took off all the plasters; slept well, and had no trouble in turning over as much as she liked for the first time in many months. Soon after this I found she had been troubled for a long time with kidney trouble. I learned of this one evening after she had retired, and treated her at once. That night she had very little trouble, the next night less, and that was the last of the kidney trouble.
One Saturday morning she stepped into the elevator which had settled over a foot below the floor she was on. She fell heavily to the floor of the elevator, which the shock of her fall took to the bottom of the shaft. She was badly bruised and hurt internally, so as to produce much bleeding. I was away from home at the time and did not return until the next Tuesday evening. I found her in a deplorable condition. During this time she would have no physician, but studied Science and Health and tried to demonstrate over the accident. On my return I at once began to work for her. By the next morning she was much improved, and in a day or two was all right.
