A promise, kept
On many Christian Science branch church auditorium walls, a quote from Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy offers this comforting promise: “Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need” (p. 494).
For many years, sitting in church, I would take these words to heart. They offered great encouragement when I felt that I was praying for good to come along for me. This promise told me that if I pray and wait patiently, I can expect whatever I needed to show up someday and in some way.
But one day, I saw something different in that promise. It said to me that wherever in the world a human need had already been met, it was divine Love that did it. These words made me realize that wherever good has come, and wherever good was, God alone brought it. Good can even be seen as another word for God and therefore is always present.
