To carry on the mission

I really liked the Item of Interest “Civil Rights—An ongoing mission rooted in faith,” in the April 4 issue [“Vibrant at any age”].

In this article, the Rev. Joseph Lowery, speaking about Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., says, “I think they [people] are remembering him more than they are the message . . . . I think we are celebrating the preacher, but we are minimizing the sermon and the message. It is good to exalt the missionary, but we got to remember the mission as well.”

I think this is analogous to Christ Jesus and his mission. We celebrate Christmas—his birth—but do we remember day after day to live his life and act as he did? We celebrate Easter—his death—but do we remember the most important part, his resurrection proving that life was not in the body, or matter, but continuous as an idea protected and cared for by God, the Creator?

Christ Jesus had a mission and it is not over; it continues forever in the promise of physical healing and the saving of mankind from the effects of sin, or wrong thinking and doing. We are here today to carry on his mission.

‘So clarifying’

Special thanks to Rick Dearborn for his article “A metaphysical lesson from thermodynamics,” in the April 4 Sentinel. We pulled this Sentinel out recently for the articles on aging, which are excellent.

What a wonderful bonus to read Rick’s article. Somewhat embarrassingly I had never even quite understood or been convinced that darkness is just the absence of light. This article was so clarifying on that alone, which in turn makes the concept of evil as the (supposed) absence of good so much clearer.

As I remember on my initial reading of this issue, I’d avoided Rick’s article because of the word thermodynamics in the title. “What could I possibly get out of that!” Good reminder not to let a title put you off.

Thanks to all involved for the wonderful Sentinels we are privileged to receive each week.

God’s law governs all

[Name removed by request]’s article, “Trustworthy government—present now” in the Sentinel of April 25 [“God-governed progress”], reminded me of an experience we had.

We owned an apartment building waiting to be sold and let a young man stay there to help protect the property. When he was away one day, someone broke into the building and stole a box with his cherished belongings, which had come from his grandfather.

As I prayed, I applied the commandment “Thou shalt not steal” (Ex. 20:15). I realized that this was a divine law, which also governed the thief.

Several days later a package wrapped in newspaper was left at the entrance of the building. It contained the stolen treasures and a note saying that the package did not belong to her son. How grateful we may be that the Commandments apply to all mankind.

Spot on!

Betty H. Thompson’s article “Shelter from the storm” in the May 2 Sentinel [“Take no thought”] is spot on. I am sitting here in northwest Arkansas, another “tornado alley,” rain streaming down the windows, thunder roaring, and I marvel at this wonderful article. It dissolves one after another of mortal mind’s arguments, leaving not destruction but God’s “still small voice.”

Thank you for so specifically, week after week, following Christ’s command to watch.
