Comfort with comfort

My grandmother used to say that there are three steps to spiritual inspiration. One, God gives you an idea. Two, you have to put it into practice in your own life. And three, you get to share it with somebody else!

The holy purpose of spiritual understanding is fulfilled in this way. This fits with a verse in the Bible, in Second Corinthians. It says, “. . . we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God” (1:4, New International Version).

That so realigns my thought! Instead of believing that we live in a state of unsolved problems, we can humbly admit that we are being loved by God in a way that enables us to love and support others. So when we hear of disasters in other people’s lives or in the world, instead of shutting them out because we’ve got too many of our own problems, we can simply ask, “What do I know about God that would help?” Even the smallest inspiration—a Bible verse, an insight from prayer—moves mountains. More and more I find myself taking spiritual understanding seriously because I can see its relevance to the needs of others.
