The Fires of Purification

One's redemption from evil is ensured when purification comes through the activity of Christ, Truth, in human consciousness. This cleansing process demands spiritualization of one's thought and annihilation of material beliefs. Mrs. Eddy tells us: "God is a consuming fire. He separates the dross from the gold, purifies the human character, through the furnace of affliction." Miscellaneous Writings, p. 151;

In the testing times which come to all followers of Truth, the impurities that constitute the carnal mind are reduced to ashes in proportion to each step Spiritward. What, to mortal sense, may seem afflictions are often blessings in disguise, for through the purification of sinful sense one is regenerated, sanctified, and blessed. No good is destroyed in the fire; but deep-rooted material beliefs are eliminated until man's indestructible and Christlike qualities are imaged forth more brightly and the individual bears witness only to Truth.

Faithfully applying his knowledge of Christian Science to every problem confronting him, the student gains his release from error. This work requires that he express only good thoughts and reject untrue concepts. The mental purgation goes on until evil is extinguished in his consciousness through the chastening fires of Truth and Love. Then he gains the certainty, born of proof, that evil never was part of the real man, for it is no part of God s creation.
