Christian Science found me when I was walking in deep darkness and there seemed to be no more hope for me.

When I was twenty-seven years old, I became ill with diphtheria. This illness left me with an inflammation of the heart. All efforts to heal the illness failed. I lay in the hospital under the care of various specialists, and these doctors took great pains with me. However, my condition continued to become worse instead of better. A doctor then informed me that this illness could not be healed, as the heart muscle had been partially destroyed. I believed what he said, for two years had passed in the meantime.

I could not think of working. What was to become of my family? I was in despair and said frequently, "Dear God, isn't there anything at all that can help me?" Then a friend brought me The Herald of Christian Science (German Edition) with the remark that a woman who had heard through him about my illness had asked him to give me this periodical. She had said that if I were to read it I could get well.
