I first came to know of Christian Science while serving in the Armed Forces during World War II. A member of our unit, a sincere and diligent student of this Science, became a close friend. On occasions we read the Lesson-Sermon together, even though I understood little of what was read and had no wish to embrace the teaching. None of the wonderful instances of healing, including protection, which I witnessed and experienced personally when in his company did I attribute to Christian Science until two years after my return to civilian life.

At that point I was on the verge of a complete physical and mental breakdown. I was a constant sufferer from many bodily disorders, including a varicose condition in one ankle and both legs, acute gastric trouble, failing eyesight, and a hernia. I had undergone surgery for the hernia, but it was threatening to recur whenever I exerted myself. There was also a problem of family estrangement.

One night, when I was particularly fearful, the angel message came to me, "Try Christian Science." At once I sought out the copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy my friend had given me, and I lay down to read. After reading awhile, I fell into a deep, untroubled sleep for the first time in months. I awoke in the morning as though reborn. The varicose condition was gone, and after a few weeks of joyous, earnest study I realized that all the physical ills had been healed. My gratitude was inexpressible.
