The Comfort of Unchanging Love

The concept of God as Mother was given to Isaiah many years ago when he voiced God's message, "As one whom his mother comforteth, so will I comfort you" (66:13). What a sense of comfort and confidence a child derives from the love and care expressed by his mother! He can rely on this unchanging love at hand in times of need, and he accepts it without question.

Jesus' understanding of God as Love inspired both his words and his healings of mankind, correcting the false concept of man condemned to suffer and sin. His understanding of God was in contradiction to the concept of God as a God of wrath. In Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy writes (p. 42): "Jesus' life proved, divinely and scientifically, that God is Love, whereas priest and rabbi affirmed God to be a mighty potentate, who loves and hates. The Jewish theology gave no hint of the unchanging love of God."

Jesus' concept of God as Love brought down on him the anger of the rabbis, who could not grasp such a wonderful truth. They clung to their old theology. Though Jesus' teaching did not reach their darkened sense, it so permeated the thought of his disciples and followers that John, also a Jew brought up in the traditional theological teachings, wrote three epistles permeated with the spirit of the truth that God is Love.
