Thoreau pointed out that the Bible was the most unread and misunderstood book of human civilization. For, he wrote, "there are severe things in it. 'Seek ye first the kingdom of God.' 'If thou will be perfect, go and sell what thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven.' 'For what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul?' "...

In fact, partly to obscure and to nullify the impact of the Bible, the organized church for many centuries attempted to keep it out of the hands of the people. And its great qualities were also reduced by a constant effort to transform the Bible into a mere exposition of a doctrine of salvation and of a magical incantation which could be repeated. . . .
