"Humility is the first step"

Humility is of prime importance to all students of Christian Science, and, indeed, of major significance to all mankind. It must be fully understood, loved, and respected for its own sake, and, above all, it must be expressed.

Mrs. Eddy states in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 354), "Experience shows that humility is the first step in Christian Science, wherein all is controlled, not by man or laws material, but by wisdom, Truth, and Love." Does it not behoove us, then, to take this big first step and start on the upward road to heaven, harmony?

It is heartening to recall that the Master, Christ Jesus, is sometimes referred to as the humble Nazarene. It was his very humility, his putting off, or unseeing, mortal selfhood and his seeing only the man of God's creation, that enabled him to heal. And it was he who said (Luke 14:11), "Whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted." In the incomparable Sermon on the Mount the great Way-shower also declared, "Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth" (Matt. 5:5).
