In the Gospel of John is recorded Christ Jesus' promise (8:32), "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." It is about forty years since I first became interested in Christian Science, and that promise has been fulfilled in my experience.

At that time I was suffering from a chronic, painful internal condition, the aftereffect of gas poisoning in the First World War. For this affliction I had sought relief from materia medica but without avail. However, my interest in Christian Science was quickened, not because I had a desire for physical healing but because I found in its teachings spiritual satisfaction and comfort beyond that I had experienced in the church with which I was then affiliated.

Nevertheless, at a time of intense suffering, and after I had been studying the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, for a short period, there came a moment when I was roused to utilize the inspiring truths I had learned in my newfound religion.
