At the age of thirteen I was taken to a Christian Science Sunday School by an older sister. The very first Sunday I learned that God is Principle. Up to then I had believed that God was someone in the sky who was just waiting for me to do wrong. On looking back, I realize I must have attended that Sunday School less than a dozen times, yet I also learned that angels are God's thoughts and not the feathered creatures I had dreaded since I was a very young girl. The comfort and joy of these two lessons have remained with me ever since.

Whenever I went to church it was to a Church of Christ, Scientist. I didn't study or put into practice consciously what our Leader states in the textbook, but I knew what I heard at the services was indeed the truth.

Time went on, and I was to be married. This was in the nineteen-thirties, and things were very difficult. We were within a week of our wedding day, and still we had nowhere to live. I met an old school friend whom I had not seen for years. She told me of a flat which was becoming vacant that very week. She arranged to take me and introduce me to the owner of the flat. This she did, and after my husband-to-be had met the owner and seen the flat, we were accepted as tenants.
