WORDS OF CURRENT INTEREST

[The words in this issue are related to the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly designated to be read in Christian Science churches on January 30, 1966.]

He ... loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment love ye therefore the stranger (Deut. 10:18, 19)

According to Mosaic law, a stranger, or sojourner, was a person who dwelt with the Hebrews but who was not of Israelitish descent. Such a person was under God's protection, and the Israelites were charged to treat him kindly and to care for his needs if he were poor.

Hosea (ho-ze'ao as in obey, e as in eve, a as in sofa; or-za'a—first a as in ace, second as in sofa). Hosea was a prophet who lived in the Northern Kingdom and was a contemporary of Isaiah, Amos, and Micah. His writings contain many references to agricultural details, but his message is concerned mainly with the love of God.
