Never Despair!

Many proverbs and well-known sayings stress the importance of hope. It is generally conceded that while we can see any possibility for improvement in the circumstances around us, we can at least hold on hopefully until a change for the better occurs. Popular belief would persuade us, however, that when there is no apparent prospect of relief from trying conditions, despair is the natural consequence. Hope and its supposed absence, despair, are viewed in a new light in Christian Science.

"The description of man as purely physical, or as both material and spiritual,—but in either case dependent upon his physical organization,—is the Pandora box, from which all ills have gone forth, especially despair." So writes Mrs. Eddy on page 170 of Science and Health.

The explanation of where evil comes from has been attempted throughout recorded history. In Greek mythology is the tale of the chief of the Olympian gods, Zeus, who gave Pandora a box which she opened, although she had been commanded not to do so. According to the myth, all the ills of the world had been imprisoned in the box, and they flew out to harass and afflict mankind. We may well smile to think that anyone would consider true the myth of Pandora's box.
