Feeding the Affections

Daily one may see many troubled faces, hear of many troubled lives, and it soon becomes obvious that mankind's problems frequently concern the affections: misplaced affections, misunderstood affections, unreciprocated, false, or illicit affections. One dictionary defines the word "affection" as "a settled good will, love, or zealous attachment."

But a prevailing, and material, notion is that affection is human emotion, based on psychological and even physical properties of the human mind and body. The human race is fast discovering that affection based on a material sense of life and love is unstable and often devastating.

A Christian Scientist prays frequently for correct nourishment of the affections. In the Lord's Prayer the line. "Give us this day our daily bread" (Matt. 6:11), is spiritually interpreted by our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, on page 17 of Science and Health as, "Give us grace for to-day; feed the famished affections." The "Daily Prayer," found in the Manual of The Mother Church by our Leader, reads (Art. VIII, Sect. 4), "'Thy kingdom come;' let the reign of divine Truth, Life, and Love be established in me, and rule out of me all sin; and may Thy Word enrich the affections of all mankind, and govern them!"
