Holding Crime in Check

The technological, sociological, and economic progress that has occurred in this century has brought a higher standard of living than ever before to great numbers of people throughout the world. Poverty has long been considered to be one of the major causes of crime. It would therefore seem logical to assume that the prevalence of this greater degree of affluence would contribute toward the elimination of much of the world's crime.

However, the hard facts of contemporary life do not bear out this assumption. There has been an alarming increase in crime of every name and nature. It is obvious that money has not made morals, nor has the fear of punishment been an effective deterrent to crime. Juvenile delinquency is a major problem, and moral sensibility in general seems at a low ebb.

Students of Christian Science recognize these disturbances to be the hidden, aggressive elements of the carnal mind being forced to the surface through the activity of the Christ, Truth, in human consciousness. Mrs. Eddy foresaw the chaotic darkness that would precede the dawn of spiritual enlightenment. In Science and Health, she writes (p. 96): "Mortal error will vanish in a moral chemicalization. This mental fermentation has begun, and will continue until all errors of belief yield to understanding."
