My first position took me to a city hundreds of miles from my home, family, and friends. During this time I put aside the Bible and the Christian Science textbook by Mrs. Eddy, and attended church only when convenient. I was attracted by what appeared to me at the time to be more glamorous living. But it was not long before I had an experience which brought all my earlier Christian Science Sunday School teaching sharply back into focus.

While working at home alone one evening, I was confronted by an intruder who threatened me with serious physical harm. I was quite frightened and felt there was nothing I could do to help myself. I remember thinking then that either Christian Science worked or it didn't; and if it did, then I would have to prove it right where I was.

The story of Daniel in the lions' den came to my thought. I remembered Daniel's courage in facing the lions and that it was his trust in God which protected him. My fear was replaced with a calm assurance that God was going to help me. I did not try to fight back physically, but I simply looked on the man as an idea of Love, I saw that one idea of Love could not possibly harm another, for that was not in tune with God's law of harmony. I declared over and over: "God is my Life, my shield, my armor. He will not allow harm to come to me." And more, I saw that because my attacker had a spiritual selfhood, he could not be used for any evil purpose.
