[The words in this issue are related to the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly designated to be read in Christian Science churches on October 24, 1965.]

The former treatise (Acts 1:1)

The majority of Bible scholars agree that "the former treatise" means the Gospel of Luke and that the book of Acts, dating later, is a production of Luke himself. The author of Acts was certainly a companion of the Apostle Paul, and his activities suit the known facts about Luke. Then the dedication of both books to Theophilus and the similarity of style and standpoint imply common authorship.
