Truth Is a Shield and Buckler
It is self-evident that one cannot be conscious of something that is not in his consciousness. (Christian Science teaches us how important it is to be watchful at the door of our thinking. It brings to view clearly what the Psalmist meant when he said (Ps. 91:4), "His truth shall be thy shield and buckler."
The principal meaning of the words "shield" and "buckler" implies the defense of oneself from blows, against injury, or the protection of one's body from assault. We learn in this Science how to defend our thinking from the assaults of error, from aggressive suggestion, from wrong influence. It is one of the daily duties of the student of this Science to purify his thinking by study and prayer so that his experience will reflect the control of Truth and Love.
One's consciousness is the key to one's experience. This is true in all areas of our activity. Sin must be thought before it can appear in experience, disease is a mental concept portrayed on the body, and lack is essentially poverty of thought. In all these ways we learn how important our thought is to our experience.
