Why Study the Lesson-Sermon?
[Of Special Interest to Young Men and Women]
It is understandable that young men and women with their usually absorbing lives should demand a satisfying reason for spending time and effort daily in studying the weekly Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly. That earnest Christian Scientists habitually study the selected passages from the Bible and from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy will not necessarily inspire the senior Sunday School pupil or the young person now attending church to do so, but the adoption of a spiritual motive will.
Pondering this, the writer recalled the large sums of money recently sought for cleaning London's famous St. Paul's Cathedral, covered with years of accumulated grime, a slow defacement caused by elements in the surrounding atmosphere. Such defacement is not readily detectable at first, but its cumulative effect is finally unmistakable.
The young Christian Scientist may see a parallel here, providing him with the wise spiritual motive to maintain the purity of consciousness characteristic of his real, spiritual identity as the reflection of God.
