RADIO PROGRAM No. 103 - Dare to Be Moral!

[This is the second of two programs dealing with moral standards]

INTERVIEWER: Everybody who works with young people knows the pressure they are under to lower their moral standards in order to be popular. And I think a lot of young people would ask, Do you honestly believe there is an alternative to drifting along with the pack, an alternative that makes it possible to have both moral standards and friends?

SPEAKER: Yes, indeed, there is an alternative. For lasting happiness and enduring friendships, young people have to build on something more basic than following the pack. Christian Science teaches that this comes about through learning to appreciate the spiritual facts of their own being, through bringing to light the spiritual resources that belong to each one of us. Young people need to ask themselves such questions as these: What do I bring to dates? What do I take to friendship? What Godlike qualities can I find in others and help to enhance? What am I doing right now that will contribute to lasting marriage and a good home?

There are young people who drift into going steady simply because they are afraid that they won't have dates if they don't. They really don't want to go steady. And then this leads into heavy petting and sexual experimentation. Sometimes they're forced into an early marriage, which later ends in divorce. Such young people learn firsthand how much was lacking in their lives to really build on. They need to put their lives on a more spiritual basis.
