Letters to the Press from Christian Science Committees on Publication

The Surrey Advertiser

The Surrey Advertiser
Guildford, Surrey, England

Two of your recent issues carried the report of certain remarks about Christian Science made by [a Bishop]. Christian Scientists among your readers will warmly appreciate his kindly reference to the "good points" of their religion.

Both the [Bishop] and your readers will, however, be glad to know that Christian Scientists do not blithely dismiss pain as unreal in the ordinary sense of the word. The Bishop has doubtless been misled by those critics of Christian Science who aver that this is so, simply because they have failed, when studying the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, to ascribe to the word "real'" the definition "God-made"—the sense in which it is uniformly used by the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science.

If pain were ultimately "real," God-ordained, to conquer it would be impossible—indeed, it would be impertinent to try. Christian Scientists treat pain not as a condition to be ignored, but as a challenge to gain that deeper understanding of God and man which not only heals it but removes its cause.
