Ever-present Angels

[Of Special Interest to Children]

Claudia and Lila are sisters who are beginning the study of Christian Science. Often, when they need strengthening and comforting, they turn to a beautiful article by Mrs. Eddy called "Angels." In it she says (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 306): "When angels visit us, we do not hear the rustle of wings, nor feel the feathery touch of the breast of a dove; but we know their presence by the love they create in our hearts. Oh, may you feel this touch,— it is not the clasping of hands, nor a loved person present; it is more than this: it is a spiritual idea that lights your path!"

One night Claudia and Lila felt the healing presence of Love's angels and proved for themselves that this touch is not "a loved person present." That evening, while their mother was away baby-sitting for a neighbor, their father went out on a short errand, leaving the girls at home by themselves. However, the errand took longer than expected. In fact, as the warm afterglow of sunset turned to the darkness of night, the errand began to seem unusually long to the girls.

When their mother telephoned, Claudia answered in tears. She begged her mother to come home right away, because both she and Lila were afraid to be alone in the house at nighttime. Her mother replied that she would come home if it was necessary, but she didn't think it was.
