A few years ago, while I was...
A few years ago, while I was taking basic training in the United States Army along with approximately one hundred and sixty other trainees, influenza developed in the group. As the days went by, more and more of the young men were unable to attend the morning roll call. The officials in charge, in an effort to help, set up emergency hospital facilities, but eventually over half the men were either in the hospital or in strict quarantine in their barracks.
At this point I also was stricken with the disease and was not able to get out of bed. I remember taking my copy of Science and Health, the Christian Science textbook by Mrs. Eddy, and simply beginning to read. Never have I been so grateful for Science and Health. I did not want to be sent to the hospital; and having no practitioner or fellow Christian Scientist to turn to, I felt very much alone and a long way from home.
Although I had been reared in Christian Science and regularly attended the Sunday School for many years, this was the first opportunity I had had to apply, entirely on my own, the truths I had been learning. I lay in my bunk and started at the first page.
