No one could have been more...
No one could have been more prejudiced against Christian Science than I was. Although I knew nothing about this religion, I had the idea that all Scientists were queer people and that Christian Science was a strange religion and not for me.
One day when I had nothing else to read. I picked up a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, which belonged to someone else in the home. I opened it and the first words which met my eyes were these (p. 1): "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,— a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." This startled me and certainly made me think.
I continued to read, and at the end of two weeks I had read. Science and Health from cover to cover. I read, not with the expectation of receiving a healing, but simply because Science and Health proved to be so interesting and so reasonable that I had to continue reading. At the end of the two weeks I had received several physical healings: a nervous breakdown, headaches, hay fever, and constipation. I went back to work after being absent from it for two years. Although I had received such wonderful healings, I drifted along, attending church occasionally but not becoming an earnest student until several years later.
