I want to share with you the story of how I came into Christian Science. Late in 1929, after losing all I had in the way of money and two weeks later experiencing the loss of our boy in a truck accident, I was in a state of deep discouragement and despair. I drank and smoked heavily and became very domineering in my actions.
Having been brought up in the orthodox Jewish faith, I believed I was being punished, since I had been taught that God loves and punishes. This resulted in deep discouragement and a physical breakdown, for which the doctors could offer me little help. So we went to Florida to pass my final days. When we arrived there, I visited a friend, and he recommended Christian Science. I consented to visit a practitioner because I felt I had nothing to lose. This practitioner pointed out to me that God is Love, not a god of vengeance, and that God loved me more than my own parents.
This concept of God as Love uplifted me from the sense of deep depression and mental suffering and changed my entire outlook on life. At this point my healing began, and with the help of practitioners, and through consecrated study of the Bible and of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" and the other writings of Mary Baker Eddy, as well as the other Christian Science publications, my health was completely restored.
