For a long time I had been praying...

For a long time I had been praying in Christian Science about a problem in human relationships. It was of such a personal nature that I felt reluctant to talk about it with a practitioner. So I prayed as best I could. But the difficulty did not yield. In fact, it worsened until it affected me physically. And I discovered that more and more I was nurturing false gods—resentment, self-pity, and discouragement. It was then I decided to ask for the help of a practitioner.

After I poured out my woes she looked at me kindly and said, "You seem to have a very deep-rooted fear." This startled me, for I had not listed fear as one of the false gods I had been worshiping. But fear was there in my consciousness, and the penetrating thought of the practitioner had discerned it.

In working with me, she made me realize that we have to stand up to error in order to prove its nothingness. She called my attention to Mrs. Eddy's statements in Science and Health (p. 71): "Evil has no reality. It is neither person, place, nor thing, but is simply a belief, an illusion of material sense." I was able to understand that if it is to be destroyed, error has to be seen as neither person, place, nor thing.
