Shortly after the turn of the...

Shortly after the turn of the century my mother and I went to Europe, primarily for the benefit of her health. After nearly four years during which she failed to improve, two Parisian doctors told my father that she should return home bccause they gave her no more than six months to live. After our return to the United States, a friend interested her in Christian Science, and in a few months she was restored to health. As a result of her healing I gladly entered the Christian Science Sunday School, and from that time on we both relied on its teachings for physical healing.

Through my high school and college years, Science was a never-ending source of inspiration and protection. On graduation, shortly before the First World War, I accepted a junior engineering position in a mining camp in South America. From then on, I spent nearly thirty years in isolated, foreign mining camps. During my first vacation in the United States, before it became involved in the First World War, I was able to take class instruction, and its influence was sufficiently powerful to prevent me from ever being tempted to turn to anything other than Science for healing or spiritual support.

During these years I had many convincing proofs of the protecting power of prayer. In the early twenties I was engaged in mapping a large, almost unexplored area in a remote South American jungle, access to which involved nearly three weeks' journey by pack train. After I had been there several months an infection developed in my thigh. Because it grew steadily worse it was decided to return me to the company's base camp in an isolated jungle town to get medical help. It took me a week to get there, traveling by mule. After examining me, a doctor informed my companion that it might be necessary to amputate the leg.
