For some time I have desired to...
For some time I have desired to express my gratitude for a healing of impaired vision. One day while I was reading, my sight suddenly became dim. At about the same time my husband came in. He decided that I needed help and drove me to an optometrist's office.
When my eyes were examined I was told that a change of glasses would not help, and it was recommended that I visit an oculist. However, when I returned home I decided to rely on Christian Science treatment alone. I did a great deal of studying myself, and the assistance of a practitioner whom I had asked for treatment was very helpful. She urged that I denounce the suggestions of mortal mind by declaring mortal mind itself to be unreal. She asked me to declare that mortal mind has nothing to do with man, for man, God's image and likeness, is spiritual and expresses the one divine Mind, God, who knows only what is good and true.
I steadfastly held to the truth that man is God's perfect reflection, and because he is, he reflects perfect vision and cannot be deprived of it. The practitioner and I continued to pray in this way, and my sight was soon restored to its normal clarity.
One day I experienced severe pain around the region of the heart. This was something I had not experienced before, and I at once left everything to study the current Bible Lesson, given in the Quarterly. But the pain returned.
This time I called a practitioner, who gave me references to study. One sentence from "Miscellaneous Writings" by Mrs. Eddy was particularly helpful. It is part of her reply to the question, "Do you believe in change of heart?" and reads (p. 50), "We do believe, and understand —which is more—that there must be a change from human affections, desires, and aims, to the divine standard, 'Be ye therefore perfect;' also, that there must be a change from the belief that the heart is matter and sustains life, to the understanding that God is our Life, that we exist in Mind, live thereby, and have being."
My healing came gradually, and whenever pain returned, I remembered that the practitioner had said, "Right where the pain seems to be, there in reality God is." This truth was effective in easing the pain. During the time the healing was taking place I was able to continue with my usual activities, and I was eventually restored to normal health.— (Mrs.) Alba I. Gifford, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.
