"The consciousness of Truth rests us more than hours of repose in unconsciousness" (Science and Health, p. 218). This statement was proved true to me some years ago when I was suffering from a severe case of insomnia that lasted for a year and a half. During the periods of wakefulness, I had wonderful opportunities to ponder the truths I had recently begun to study in Christian Science, and I saw that fear of the effects of sleeplessness was an error that needed to be overcome.

Gradually I began to understand and to accept the fact that consciousness of God's presence and love could sustain me and was more valuable than sleep. I ceased to be concerned about whether or not I slept. When that point was reached, natural and restful sleep followed. This healing took place nine years ago and has been permanent.

During this same period I was also troubled with a skin disease that covered my face and other portions of my body. One day as I looked at myself in the mirror, I declared aloud the truth that man is the image and likeness of God and reflects only the good, the pure, and the true. I did not look at myself in the mirror again for two weeks, but held steadfastly to the spiritual significance of the words "spotless reflection." It was a happy day, indeed, when my mother quietly informed me that I was entirely free.
