The Challenge of Truth
[The following Christian Science program of the above title was presented on Sunday, September 13, over the Columbia Broadcasting System "Church of the Air." The speaker was George Nay.]
The basic urge of mankind has always been to know! Little by little this compelling impulse has broken the fetters of fear inspired by the awesome phenomena of nature and has dissipated many of the limiting superstitions regarding the power that lay behind the phenomena. As mankind's knowledge of their surroundings has developed, understanding of the truth has replaced beliefs and has thereby loosened the hold ancient superstitions had on the human mind.
Thus mankind have progressed through their response to the challenge of truth. The urge to penetrate beyond outward appearances by-piercing the opaque curtain of matter, to know the truth which breaks down limitations, is stronger today than ever before. This is the driving force back of all eager reaching out for the essence and truth of all things, and the enlightenment it brings is causing the unknown, the customary belief, the dogmatic tenet, the inherited superstition gradually to disappear.
Today this urge for truth is sending missiles into space to circle the earth, to search out the far reaches of the stellar universe which are beyond human sight and knowledge.
