During the years after my first...
During the years after my first healing in Christian Science, many blessings have come to me. Through the understanding that God is Love, ever present, and omnipotent, which I have gained through my study of this Science, I have changed my outlook on life from one of deep pessimism and fear to one of security.
In Christian Science we do not avoid problems; but by putting into practice what we understand, we learn to face problems and finally to solve them. There have been many problems and trials in my experience, but the understanding of spiritual reality and of man's spiritual nature as God's image and likeness has been an immeasurable help in bringing about healings without material aid.
One day while I was working at a washing machine, my hand was caught in the electric wringer. It took a few minutes for a friend to open the wringer and free my hand. During this time I had to work to realize the unreality of pain and to know that man is always conscious of omnipotence.
When the hand was free, I placed it behind my back and did not look at it. The pain had erased, but I was aware that the hand was not healed. After a few minutes of silent prayer, I went back to the machine, first working only with one hand, but later using both, though the one that had been caught was not of much use.
After finishing the laundry, I decided to do more specific prayerful work to overcome the condition. After a very short time I felt bones slipping back into place. Immediately it was possible for me to move my hand and fingers normally. Only a little swelling was left, and this disappeared the next day.
Another healing occurred about a year ago. For some time I had had a serious heart condition. Earnest work in Science brought only temporary relief. One night, when the condition was very aggressive, the thought came that the work was done, and I had only to assert my freedom. There was no fear; and the next thought was, "Thy will be done," and with it came a great sense of peace. A short time later I must have fallen asleep, because I awoke the next morning free from pain and other disagreeable symptoms. I knew I had had my healing.
Words are inadequate to express my gratitude, not only for these healings, but also for so many other proofs of God's care for His children. I am deeply grateful for class instruction and for opportunities to serve in church work, grateful for all the activities of The Mother Church and to all who are working faithfully to carry on the work of our Leader, Mrs. Eddy.—(Mrs.) Ilse Apfel, São Paulo, Brazil, South America.
