Christian Science was presented to me when, to mortal sense, there was no hope. I was stricken with pernicious anemia; and although I felt that I could not accept the medical verdict, there seemed no escape from the loss of strength and freedom.

I shall never forget my first visit to a Christian Science practitioner. She told me I must choose which treatment I wanted. If I had Christian Science treatment, I must give up reliance on medicine. I did not understand her, but I believed her and went home and threw away all drugs. The first time I read the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, I thought it was the loveliest book I had ever read. Through the study of this book and with the practitioner's patient help, I was able to demonstrate strength and freedom.

At about that time almost everything that I seemed to hold dear was swept away overnight. I was left with no material evidence of supply, and I had a young daughter to support. Many times there was not enough for us to eat, but through trust in God we were sustained.
