HONESTY

[Of Special Interest to Young People]

One Sunday a class of teenagers in a Christian Science Sunday School seriously considered the deep implications of one short sentence written by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." The sentence, found on page 453, is, "Honesty is spiritual power."

The pupils pondered together what honesty is, how it is expressed, and how the promised spiritual power is attained. They had often discussed the seven synonyms for God, namely Principle, Mind, Soul, Spirit, Life, Truth, Love. They knew also that man is the expression of God. One very important result of expressing God as Truth, they realized, is strict honesty in human speech and action. Thus the temptation to be even slightly dishonest was seen to be a departure from God, Truth, and a temporary forfeiting of spiritual power.

One of the girls in the class went home thinking deeply upon the subject of real honesty and what it involves. She had obtained a muchdesired summer position; and in filling out the application, she had made a slight falsification regarding her permanent availability for this work. The falsification, considered necessary in order to obtain the position, was regarded as the accepted procedure among many whom she knew in her age group.
