ALL THE TITHES

A Popular magazine contained an article on the revival of tithing in many Christian churches — the custom of giving a tenth of one's goods or one's first fruits to the service of God, as practiced by the Hebrews according to the Mosaic law. The article relates that the churches' financial needs are being amply cared for and that individual church members who tithe are prospering as a result of this consistent expression of gratitude to God.

In Malachi we read (3:10), "Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it."

Through the explanations given by the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, Christian Scientists understand the spiritual significance of the Bible customs. Mrs. Eddy gives the definition of "tithe" in the Glossary of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," as follows (p. 595): "Contribution; tenth part; homage; gratitude. A sacrifice to the gods."
