During the past thirty-one years...

During the past thirty-one years Christian Science has brought me untold blessings. I have experienced physical healings, the overcoming of lack and of wrong traits of character, and healings of sorrow.

I began the study of this Science as a young girl, not for physical healing, but because I found in it the answer to my questions as to the nature of God. Also I found it to be a religion that I could make practical in my daily living.

My study really started in earnest after my mother and I had attended a lecture on Christian Science. Shortly after this, with the help of a practitioner, my mother was healed of rheumatism. This impressed me very much, because she had suffered from this complaint for a number of years.

At the time of the birth of each of my three children Christian Science help was given, and I shall always be deeply grateful to the practitioner and to the Christian Science nurse, both of whom were with me at these times.

Mrs. Eddy's words in the first paragraph on page 463 of Science and Health were an unfailing help. One line of this paragraph reads, "To attend properly the birth of the new child, or divine idea, you should so detach mortal thought from its material conceptions, that the birth will be natural and safe."

Christian Science was of inestimable help in bringing up my children, and I am grateful that they have all attended the Christian Science Sunday School.

About sixteen years ago I experienced difficulty in hearing. This affected both ears and persisted for about a year, causing me much inconvenience. I had undertaken some church work which necessitated my hearing very distinctly, and I knew that with God's help I should be able to carry it out.

Early one morning I was studying the Lesson-Sermon from the Christian Science Quarterly. The subject for that week was "Christ Jesus." Suddenly one of my ears cleared completely, and I heard more clearly than I could remember ever having heard before. I cannot describe the joy and uplift I felt over this healing. A wonderful sense of freedom and gratitude filled my consciousness. Some time later the other ear cleared also, and the healing has been permanent.

I am grateful to the Christian Science practitioners for their loving and unselfish healing work. I am grateful for class instruction, for membership in The Mother Church and in a branch church, and for the privilege of having served as First Reader and as Sunday School teacher in the latter.

My gratitude to Mrs. Eddy knows no bounds. Through her unselfish work, she gave to the world a clear explanation of Truth which heals and frees mankind from evil, and I pray that I may show this gratitude in my life. — (Mrs.) Judith M. Downing, Kenilworth, Cape Province, South Africa.
