As a child I was brought up in...

As a child I was brought up in a religious atmosphere. I had a natural desire for good, but I did not grasp the spiritual import of the Word of God as it was given to me. When I reached manhood, however, instead of obeying Christ Jesus' command (Matt. 6:33), "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness," I depended entirely on material things and a faraway God for success and happiness.

As these material concepts failed me, I developed a great fear of life. At what is called middle age, I was a complete failure. All of my human hopes and plans had been thwarted. I was without a home and barely able to make a living, and I was contemplating suicide as the only way out of my difficulties.

Near the office where I was working at the time, there was a Christian Science Reading Room. One day I wandered in, not for the help that I so badly needed, but to chide the attendant about the derelicts who I thought patronized the place. I was given a copy of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, and was asked to take it with me and to read the chapter on Prayer.
