"ROUSING THE DORMANT UNDERSTANDING"

The thought-provoking phrase, "rousing the dormant understanding," is found in Mary Baker Eddy's definition of "Church," given in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." The second paragraph of this definition reads (p. 583) : "The Church is that institution, which affords proof of its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and healing the sick."

Each student of Christian Science who correctly identifies himself as a son of God knows that he can reflect all the qualities of God and be continually conscious of that fact. Since understanding is one of God's qualities, then each son of God reflects understanding in its perfection.

A Christian Scientist need not say, "I do not have enough understanding to heal," or, "I do not know enough to demonstrate Jesus' teachings," because, as the son of God, he can demonstrate that he reflects infinite understanding.
