A GLORIOUS REST

Isaiah prophesied of the coming of the Messiah (11:10), "In that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious."

A glorious rest is known to many who have seen the sign of Christ's universal coming in Christian Science and have recognized man's real, spiritual existence in Truth, God. Through Science all can turn from material tensions and anxieties and find peace. No so-called transquilizers are sought by those who glimpse the kingdom of Spirit, which Christ Jesus proved to be present, and the real man, who inhabits that kingdom. The Master's invitation stands for all time (Matt. 11:28) : "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." The "me" to which he referred was the Christ, his spiritual selfhood. This selfhood is the consciousness of heaven, that scientific order of being, in which God's will is in full control. Man cannot wander from absolute obedience to the Father, inasmuch as he is God's expression. Spiritual sense made this order apparent to the human Jesus, and it gave him restful knowledge of the security of man in Science.

In her book "No and Yes," Mary Baker Eddy explains the manner in which the Way-shower maintained a sense of rest. She says (p. 36) : "The real Christ was unconscious of matter, of sin, disease, and death, and was conscious only of God, of good, of eternal Life, and harmony. Hence the human Jesus had a resort to his higher self and relation to the Father, and there could find rest from unreal trials in the conscious reality and royalty of his being,—holding the mortal as unreal, and the divine as real."
