The Sunday School Child and Christmas

In her article "Christmas for the Children," our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, tells us (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 261): "Too much cannot be done towards guarding and guiding well the germinating and inclining thought of childhood. To mould aright the first impressions of innocence, aids in perpetuating purity and in unfolding the immortal model, man in His image and likeness."

At this period in history, when the thoughts of most people are "germinating and inclining" toward peace, we are reminded that it was the Master, Christ Jesus, who established the idea of peace in the heart of Christianity. Throughout the centuries the angelic message, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men" (Luke 2:14), has been related to the idea of Christmas.

In the Christian Science Sunday School, pupils are taught to praise God and to live peaceably in their human relationships by following the Golden Rule (see Matt. 7:12). Accordingly the pupils are taught to express the spirit of peace and good will in their homes and toward their neighbor and to include all mankind in their affections.
