THE ROLE OF PATIENCE

In speaking to his disciples of the persecutions which they would later experience, Christ Jesus said (Luke 21:19), "In your patience possess ye your souls." Patience is closely related to such qualities as humbleness, forbearance, hopefulness, gentleness, serenity. It is best shown in an abiding faith in good, in a confident certainty that God, Spirit, is All.

Through the faithful exercise of patience, the student of Christian Science is helped toward the demonstration of the fact that the real man, made in the likeness of Spirit, is actually the only man there is.

Mary Baker Eddy writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 4), "What we most need is the prayer of fervent desire for growth in grace, expressed in patience, meekness, love, and good deeds." Patience in the acknowledgment of man's God-given capacities will empower one with strength, freedom, and joy in coping with any discordant situation with which he may be confronted.
