THE PURPLE COW
[Of Special Interest to Children]
Because Jamie lived beyond the village limits, he rode a bus each day to school. Most of the time, the children had fun on the bus, laughing and visiting with each other. But sometimes there would be an empty seat because one of the children was not going to school on that particular day. Then some of the boys and girls would talk about their friend who was absent. They would say that he was sick and would describe the illness.
Jamie went to the Christian Science Sunday School, and so he knew that sickness was unreal. He knew this because he had learned that God made everything and that everything God made was good. He had read in the Bible (Gen. 1: 31), "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." He knew that sickness was not good and that, therefore, God could not have made it. He saw too that if God did not make it, then it was nothing.
Jamie wished with all his heart that the boys and girls on the bus would not talk about sickness as though it were something very real and scary. One night, just before he went to bed, he talked with his mother about the conversations on the bus.
