MAKING THE LECTURES MORE FRUITFUL

It might be said that going to a Christian Science lecture and journeying to a neighborhood store to do some shopping have one thing in common. In each instance, if we do not wish to return home empty-handed, we need to take something with us. In the case of the neighborhood store, obviously, it is necessary to take money or the ability to obtain credit. In the case of a Christian Science lecture, the need is for what might be termed the currency of gratitude, inspiration, and receptivity.

In Christian Science we learn that there are many ways of obtaining such currency. For example, we can be grateful that Mary Baker Eddy was divinely inspired to make provisions for the sharing of spiritual good through authorized Christian Science lectures. Said the Master, Christ Jesus (Mark 16: 15), "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." The truth voiced in a Christian Science lecture— every right idea, spiritually understood and expressed—does indeed go forth into human consciousness.

The greater the faith and love of those taking part in the preparatory work of the lecture, the more far-reaching and effective the healing message will be. As Mrs. Eddy writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 559): "The 'still, small voice' of scientific thought reaches over continent and ocean to the globe's remotest bound. The inaudible voice of Truth is, to the human mind, 'as when a lion roareth.' It is heard in the desert and in dark places of fear." And a few lines farther on she continues, "Then is the power of Truth demonstrated,—made manifest in the destruction of error."
